Unfinished Business - The GSL Voice
Thanks to their successful training at University of Dar es
Salaam and Manhattanville College, GSL students featured in a
unique but yet important global event.
The Director of the GSL program
Michaela Walsh chair of this year’s United Nations DPIN/NGO
conference ensured that GSL students participated in the
conference. This was also enhanced by Manhattanville College’s
commitment to promote GSL.
The three-day conference that was held at the United Nations from
the 6th - 8th of Sept brought together 2000 NGO representatives from
100 countries and left a mark for the youth voice to be echoed. The
involvement of youth on each panel accorded us the opportunity to
participate in the conference and tell the world that as young
people we are not sleeping…
Grace Nshemeire GSL2001 alumni featured as one of the panelist
of distinguished personnel, making a concise but powerful
presentation demonstrating the importance of local traders at the
grassroots level.
Her discussion was unique in a way that her presentation focused
on the real stories; real people and the real problems people go
through in accessing basic needs of life. Now with Unilever Kenya,
She further elaborated on the need for policy makers to include
local traders in addition to elaborating on the importance of
leadership at grassroots level.
Irene Kagoya GSL 2003 was one of the members of the
Multigenerational Committee that also helped to put together the
DPI/NGO workshops. Using GSL, as a case study she discussed the role
of multigenerational partnerships in the achievement of MDGS.
A photographic exhibition by
What Moves You was again displayed on one of the strategic
hallways of United Nations with different quotations from the
GSL2005 students’ Perception and visions of making the world a
better place.
Cleopatra Mukangara GSL2003 was also actively involved in
organizing the conference. GSL was indeed on the global map during
the three days conference at the UN we are proud that Michaela’s
determination and commitment to youth initiative accorded GSL a
voice.
